About JW Young Carp Rods

JW Young Carp Rods

Born in Redditch in 1870, James William Young was the son of a fishing reel maker. A natural innovator with a flare for design, he was believed to be instrumental in the early development of the Aerial reel. At the young age of just 16 he built the smallest, fully working model of a penny farthing bicycle in the work (consisting of over 400 handmade parts) - a remarkable feat of engineering when it’s considered there was a distinct lack of tools available to him at the time.

Following JW Young’s tragic death whilst on holiday in the Isle of Man in 1921, the JW Young business was continued by his two sons Howard and James Robert, located at Mayfield Works, Redditch. The two sons were later joined by Edward E Young, another of James’ sons.

Following the war, the JW Young company was purchased by an American company by the name of Noris Shakespeare in 1965.

The name was then carried on unil 2001, when JW Young and Sons Ltd was bought out by Masterline International Ltd. To the present day all components for JW Young rods and reels are made in the UK, most manufactured in the new Young workshops now located on the outskirts of Redditch. Assembly has now been transferred to the Masterline works in Tewksbury although final inspection is personally carried out by Jim Young (the grandson of the late James William Young) before personally signing a certificate to say that the JW Young rod or reel conforms to his high standards.
